Ensuring Pet Safety During Swimming

As the summer heat rises, you and your furry companion are likely eager to cool off by taking a swim. However, it’s important to note that not all dogs or pets are naturally adept at swimming, so it’s crucial to take proper precautions when enjoying the water together. Here are five tips to help keep your pet safe while swimming:

#1: Offer fresh drinking water

When your thirsty pet enters a pool or any body of water, they may unintentionally consume water containing chemicals or contaminants. Make sure to provide plenty of fresh water to quench their thirst before and after swimming.

#2: Use a life vest for your pet

If your pet will be in deep water, it’s wise to have them wear a life vest to ensure their safety. Relying solely on their swimming abilities may not be sufficient, so allow your pet to acclimate to the vest before entering the water.

#3: Never leave your pet unattended in water

Pets can become anxious or panicked when left alone in the water. It’s important to always keep a watchful eye on your furry friend while they are swimming to prevent any potential mishaps.

#4: Teach your pet how to exit the pool

In the event that your pet accidentally falls into the pool when you’re not around, they may struggle to get out without assistance. Ensure there are stable stairs or an exit point that your pet can use to climb out of the pool, and make sure they are familiar with how to use it.

#5: Rinse your pet’s fur after swimming

After a swim in a pool or lake, various chemicals, pathogens, dirt, and debris can become embedded in your pet’s thick fur. To prevent them from ingesting or grooming these contaminants, thoroughly rinse your pet’s fur after they swim.

Accidents can occur around bodies of water, particularly if your furry companion leans in for a drink without knowing how to swim. If your pet experiences a water-related emergency this summer, don’t hesitate to contact our team for assistance.
